[The Dioceses and Bishops of Hungary (1804–1918). Institutional and Biographical Encyclopaedia V, eds. Zsófia Szirtes–Péter Tusor–Tamás Véghseő–Rupert Klieber, collaborator: Olivér Kőhalmi, Budapest 2026 (221 pp. + [18] pp. annotated b/w plates + [1] p. map supplement)]

Following the Bishops’ Lexicon of the nineteenth-century Latin-rite prelates (I–IV, CST I/7), this volume presents the biographies of the bishops of the Greek Catholic dioceses in Hungary, covering 31 hierarchs from seven dioceses across 210 pages. (The treatment of the eighth Greek Catholic diocese of the Kingdom of Hungary, Križevci, falls within the remit of Croatian historiography – alongside Zagreb, Bosnia–Đakovo, and Senj–Modruš – within the Vienna-based project.)

As in Chapters I–IV – organized by Latin-rite ecclesiastical provinces, with a separate chapter on the Territorial Abbey of Pannonhalma – the introductory surveys of the Greek Catholic dioceses and the episcopal biographies in Chapter V follow a uniform structure and methodological approach. Beyond narrowly defined (Catholic) church history, the biographical entries also incorporate perspectives from political, cultural, social, economic, and nationality history. The varied application of these approaches, together with the assessment of episcopal careers, makes the lexicon suitable not only for scholarly use but also for a broader readership.

The usability of the volume is enhanced by indexes of persons and places (compiled by György Sági, Csongor Cziráki, Olivér Kőhalmi and Attila Hőgye). Selected key figures and locations from the standalone fifth volume are brought to life visually through an archival photographic selection curated by Péter Tusor and Tamás Véghseő. To facilitate coherent use of the lexicon across the two volumes (CST I/7 and I/9) and Chapters I–V, three cross-reference lists – arranged by alphabet/page number, order of birth, and year of first appointment – have been prepared by Olivér Kőhalmi.
