This volume repays a longstanding scholarly debt. The medieval account book of the Cathedral Chapter of Győr is among the most precious sources for the study of medieval Hungary. Although generations of historians have extracted data from it for over a century, a critical edition has, until now, remained unpublished. The source offers an unprecedented level of detail into the daily life of the Győr Cathedral Chapter and, through it, into the workings of the ecclesiastical middle ranks in the late Middle Ages.
The volume is not only of relevance to scholars of ecclesiastical, economic, and social history, but also provides a wealth of valuable material for those engaged in political, diplomatic, military, lifestyle, and linguistic history. The edition draws extensively on the unpublished manuscript of historian and archivist Jenő Házi, dedicated to this account book, and thus also pays tribute to his scholarly legacy.
The critical edition is accompanied by an introduction that provides a historiographical overview of the manuscript’s origin, as well as a comprehensive index of persons, places, and subjects, along with a glossary of Hungarian words found in the source.
